1st of August – Switzerland’s National Day

1st of August – Switzerland’s National Day. It celebrates the birth of Switzerland’s Confederation. Confederation was established on 1st of August in 1291 by alliance that was formed by three cantons: Uri, Switz and Unterwalden, after making an oath at Ritli meadow. Since then, confederation counts a whopping number of 26 cantons. On this Day, Swiss people ornament their houses with Swiss flags and flags of their cantons as a way of celebrating the birth of their country. In the after noon hours every canton makes its own type of a celebration with their own particular customs. In the evenings children can be seen carrying paper made lanterns and on mountain tops big fires can be spotted.
